Why write pansexual, polyerotic pirate smut fantasy?

During Malmö pride festival RegnbågsfestivalenThe Incorrigible had the great honour of being featured in the programme, with the talk ”Why write pansexual, polyerotic pirate smut fantasy?” Since I was away at sea, the amazing Karin Tidbeck, ruler of Swedish Weird, wore my hat, and was interviewed by the equally amazing Rebecka Eriksson of Briza Maxima. Since other people might wonder about the question in the title, this is some of what they talked about.

Why write pansexual, polyerotic pirate smut fantasy?

I’m tempted to answer ”Why isn’t everybody writing pansexual, polyerotic pirate smut fantasy?” but there’s more to it, of course. My goal in writing smut is to entertain and educate, to make my readers blush without any bad aftertaste. There was a hole that needed to be filled (so to speak), or rather several holes: not only does the world need more pirate smut, there is also a need for smut that is not heteronormative, that does not have the monogamous soulmate couple endgame, and that celebrates enthusiastic consent.

Is it time for queer pirates to replace patriarchal pseudovampires?

Yes please! The huge romance genre is enormously popular (especially in the US, with millions of readers and a great many romance conventions that sometimes dwarf most mainstream bookfairs), but most fans agree it has a lot of issues.

Apart from the predominant straightness and often inflexible gender roles, and the even more predominant ”happily ever after with your one true soulmate” trope, there’s the matter that a too large selection of the genre features ”seductions” that are borderline rape – and too often there’s no ”borderline” about it. That, my friends, is not a seductive read.

What I hope The Incorrigible is, instead, is positive smut, happy smut, inclusive smut, smut where you don’t have to worry about whether the characters are really OK. Not only in that there are several different constellations of straight or queer, but that they actually talk to each other, and agree on ”Yes!” and proceed to get very busy.

Why smut?

May as well ask ”Why chocolate?” This book is truffles with the filling of your choice. And for all the reasons listed above, there needs to be more boxes of truffles where you can rely on not risking truffles that taste of ear wax or disdain. (Incidentally, if you find your favourite flavour missing, I actively encourage fanfiction and hope that you would share it with me!)

Why pirates?

I’ve answered this more elaborately in my Pirates who’ve inspired me blog series, but briefly, it’s the freedom, the swagger, the devil may care elegance, the outlawed rogues with hearts of gold, the democracy of the pirate code (which appears to be more historically accurate than one might think). It’s Captain Blood, Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Art Blastside and Captain James Hook.

Why fantasy?

Fantasy and science fiction are the perfect genres for exploring the question ”What if …?” It is where we can discover what kinds of worlds are possible – whether the norms and structures of our current society are inescapable or a perpetuated mistake. I made a world with dragons and magic and a pirate ship where everybody can live as who they are, and look! it worked.

front coverAt the talk there were also requests about recommendations of books that do break the norms and the clichés. That will be another blog post, coming up!
